Can I give you a brief insight?

"So I find this law at work: When I want to do good, evil is right there with me. For in my inner being I delight in God's law; but I see another law at work in the members of my body."

This is in Romans.

Notice several things...

1. This is Paul, talking about his state as a Christian. It would take a "vain professor" to consider himself above such a man of God.

2. See how Paul wrestled with his sin. Notice how he found out its workings in him and despised them. Look then at the sweet words of anticipation that shortly follow the above passage. "Who shall rescue me from this body of death? Thanks be to God, through Jesus Christ our Lord!"

3. Let us remember the words of our Savior:

"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted."

Do you, like Paul, consider yourself poor in spirit? Do you see that powerful root of sin, which but for the sovereign workings of the Spirit, would hold you captive? Do you mourn at the devastation and destruction which sin has wrought in your life, and in the lives of all who walk in our dark world?

4. Sin is at work in us, as long as we remain on this earth. What does Paul say to the Colossians? Devote yourself to prayer, being watchful and thankful. Are you watchful, carefully seeking out the sin that surely befouls even our purest efforts?

5. Think on this. Sin is emnity to God. It manifests itself daily in our lives by our secret hatred of the things of God, always warring in us against the Spirit. We must first see it. Then, by our great weapon, the mighty Sword of the Spirit, we may pursue it to its root and slay it.

Nothing in all creation is hidden in God's sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give an account.
