Life

Have you ever thought about the parable of the talents?

I think we can either live vigorously, or we can live vicariously.

The earth is not our home.

Yes, just this am I was reading a book by missionary Isobel Kuhn and she was talking about 'the second mile'. I thought it relates to the talents--the choices we make in how to spend our days... She first quotes Oswald Chambers, "to go the second mile means to do always your duty, and a great deal more than your duty, in the spirit of loving devotion that does not even know it has done its duty." Then she says that in their ministry in china they learned that "often the extra effort which finally swings the scuffle into victory" is that extra mile. "So has it been on the mission field very often. a regular day's work has brought no results, but an extra hour added in spite of fatigue and discouragement has often proved" to swing the scale. Then she tells a funny story of being in this town on their way to their place of work among the Lisu. They were staying in an Inn. It was Sunday and they looked for a place to have a quiet day of prayer and fasting...they found a place by a stream on the edge of town, only to be 'interrupted' off and on all day. Then they went back to town to the In where there was a wedding celebration going on and they were drawn into this celebration, given the places of honor at the table. So finally they creep off to their rooms that night very tired and lay down to go to sleep, and Isobel hears voices looking for her, the foreign woman. She snuggles down further into her bed, and hears the voices getting closer and closer, finally they light the candle by her bed and discover her and she gets up laughing, and spends the next hour with 3 women, telling them the story of Jesus. All three accept Jesus as their Saviour and she was able to send them Bibles later. As she blows out her candle and sees the stars through her open window they seems to be rebuking, "You were unwilling to go the second mile tonight, and yet, of all your day, it alone was bringing you fruit. Why aren't you steadfast, like we are?" (sorry to be so long...)
